The decision was made, with witnesses no less. It was the kind of decision usually made during a drunken stupor, but somehow, for reasons unknown, at 11:00 on a Friday night,3 acquaintances decided to embark on an adventure. This adventure would test their strenth, endurance and as we would find out, their shooting ability. Their plan; challenge 21 other 3 man teams to a rabbit hunt. The best 9 rodents would be weighed, to the ounce, and the winner thus decided.
I slid from my warm bed as the alarm warned of the oncoming sunrise. Would 5 1/2 hours be enough sleep to support a body through such an arduos task? The normal morning rituals were performed and I headed to the local 24 hour fullfillment store. Wal Mart was amlost empty, so the task of purchasing a license for my friend... Lets use a fictitous name in this story... Our second character in this fairy tale of mythical proportion will be called Venison Fan. Venison Fan is a well built and proportional hero. His phsical stature not quite intimidating, but stately all the same. His quick smile, bright eyes and firm hand shake further add to the pleasantness that is "Fan". With a quick phone call, the required information was recieved and I was on the move again. The trip was monumental, the miles extreme, but the passed with out issue. Soon enough our heros.... Hero number one, a tall and slender man, a man of whit, charm, and unbelievably good looking. His appearance was often used in comparison to fairy tale characters like Prince Charming. His demeanor was always serious, on the verge of too serious, but that may have been caused by the severity of task at hand. The life and death struggle of a day. This hero will be called.... Top Heavy. While some will think the name is for his "big head", I will believe it is due to his huge chest and shoulders, from years of body building and hard work. These two heros met at the Peosta convenience store. Here is where hero number three comes into the story
The white vehicle pullled through the busy parking lot, the driver a bold and honorable man. A man of style, depth honesty, even beyond his huge body mass, shadowing most olympians and defensive backs from the NFL. Carhartt was his armor of choice for the day, and over/under his defense of choice. Nearly as tall as "Top" and as broad as the hood of his suburban, he would be a man to reckon with, a man I was glad was on my side, for this excursion. This merry band of heros paraded to the fire station. This was hero number three's home away from home. Unlike Fan and Top, number three is a true hero. He is a volunteer firefighter, a rescue hero willing to put his life on the line (a trait I hoped not to see while hunting!) for any in need. We will call this galant family man.... Tinner.... or better yet 911. This building of brick and steel would be the jumping point for our band of bunny brothers as they set off on the journey, the defining journey of friendship and fame.
The equipment was stowed in the cavernous storage hold and our main characters donned their armor. The weather was cold, bitterly cold with haze filled skies. The snow, of record depths, would prove to be a hindering agent beyond anyones wildest dreams.
OK, so Tinner, Venison Fan and I decided to enter a rabbit hunting tournament this weekend. What a blast, we shot only 4 bunnies, but it couldn't have gone better. We didn't win the tournament, but with 3 old men and their wonderful sons, it was a day to write stories about!
