Guestimating set up for 1000 yards

OK, I am struggling with the 1000 yard shooting thing... I haven't ever shot this far, competed in a formal rifle competition, or tried to site a rifle in totally off of ballistics charts with out shooting it.
I am very anal, in case you haven't noticed, so I broke out the pencil and I logically went through the math to determine how many inches high I should be hitting at 100 yards to be dead on at 1000. The ballistics charts I have say that 18" high at 100 will be about perfect at 600 yards. From 600 yards to 1000 yards it really drops off fast, 262" more for the last 400 yards of distance. Here is where the logic and anal math comes into play. I drew an imaginary line and figured that is a line from my barrel to a target at 600 yards. I figured that 18" high here would equate to 180" at 1000 yards so it reasons that there is 180" of drop at 1000 yards to be on at 600 (hope you are still with me) To travel another 400 horizontal yards it will drop 262" or 26.2" of drop at 100 yards. That math being figured, I see the arc of my bullet having 446" of verticle travel. I set my center cross hair for 44" low and I shot a group today. My 5 shot group was pretty good, I covered the entire single hole with a penny! I must adit, it felt very strange aiming almost 4 feet below what I wanted to hit. I will be shooting at the range this week so I will report how close I was!
