I absolutely love bowfishing. OK, if you have been following any of my journal for more than 4 seconds you know I love all hunting and fishing, but this time of year I focus that passion on hunting for fish with my recurve bows.
Jody, Clint and I hunted this past weekend at one of the local rivers, the water was up about 6" due to the recent rains and the clearity was actually pretty good in spots. We hunted from Jody's boat and took turns using the push pole to propel the other 2 guys silently. It took a while to find the fish, that is one of the hardest parts of good fishing, actually finding what they are relating to at any given time. I killed the first fish of the day, at about 6 feet it wasn't a tough shot, but the stalk, while wading was very cool! The fish was pushing 10 lbs and I was really excited!
I took over the pole and proceeded to push Jody into 4 great shots... and he made all 4. Jody was on fire and ended up only missing 2 shots all day!
The fish were really rooting and spawning, we found groups upto 30 fish all tailing in a mass and piled on top of each other. It was fantastic moving from group to group and pounding fish after fish. Clint missed 5 shots in a row and finally put his bow down. It was fun to watch the competitive nature of Jody and Clint as the day went on. The fish were in the fresher water areas and in bays with sandy bottoms. The muddy bays had nothing in them, not even birds. We worked from bay to bay and finally had to go. Jody was on the pole and we tried the last group... Clint was using Jody's compound and we slid up to a big group. The first shot with the new bow and he finally connected, I shot a huge fish and we managed to land another double out of the last group.
The fishing was great, the equipment all worked great and there is no shortage of rough fish in the river right now!
